Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association was formed in January of 2005 by local Capitan residents. The purpose is to encourage the awareness and appreciation of Smokey Bear’s fire prevention message and to support and improve Smokey Bear Historical Park.
SBHA hosts the Annual Smokey Bear Days in Capitan is held the first weekend in May every year. All entertainment is free. The event brings business to the entire community with about 3,000 visitors a year. The Park brought 21,479 visitors to Capitan in 2016.
The SBHA assisted in gathering funds for the Wildland Fallen Firefighter Memorial at Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, NM, which was unveiled in May 2019.
Capitan Women's Club
The Capitan Women's Club is a non-profit organization that welcomes tax deductible donations. We fulfill our mission by providing dictionaries for 3rd graders, sending children to summer camps, establishing a youth summer art program, participating in the Halloween Carnival, giving a holiday Head Start Party, and donating to other groups with interest in the youth of Capitan.
